Crawl, Walk, Run: AI in Security Operations

GenAI is most effective when it augments human judgment rather than trying to replace it. In cybersecurity, speed matters, but context matters more.

We are still in the crawl phase of crawl, walk, run when it comes to AI in security operations. Today, GenAI is most effective when it augments human judgment rather than trying to replace it. In cybersecurity, speed matters, but context matters more. AI can surface signals faster and reduce noise, but people still own the decisions that shape outcomes.

We discussed the ethics and compliance realities organizations must address now. Data governance and privacy. Explainability and accountability for AI assisted decisions. Bias and unintended behavior. Maintaining a clear human in command model as AI capabilities expand. These are immediate governance and operating model considerations.

We also distinguished between augmented AI and more autonomous or agentic AI. Each has a place, but each carries different implications for control, trust, and accountability.

Worth also remembering that AI does not replace cybersecurity fundamentals. Least privilege, patching discipline, and basic hygiene still matter. In many cases, they matter even more.

The future of cybersecurity is not humans versus machines. It is skilled teams, strong fundamentals, and responsible AI working together under pressure.
