Shadow AI Is a Signal

For years, we talked about Shadow IT as a governance problem. In some cases, it was. But often it was a signal that employees were trying to solve a problem faster than the organization could.

I think we’re seeing the same thing with Shadow AI.

People are not experimenting with AI because they want to bypass policy. More often, they are trying to work more efficiently, automate repetitive tasks, and solve problems in new ways.

That does not eliminate the risk. Data exposure, governance, compliance, and oversight all matter. But if our only response is to block AI, we may be missing the bigger message.

Employees are telling us they see value. They are telling us they want to move faster.

The organizations that get this right will not simply focus on restricting AI. They will focus on creating safe ways for people to use it.

Shadow AI may be a risk, but it may also be one of the clearest signals your workforce can send.

The question is whether we are listening.

What are you seeing in your organizations?
